What inspired you to get into the interior design business?
Before joining the Navy, I was a graphic designer. After I was discharged, out of sheer desperation, I took a position as an electrical plan drafter. Desperately craving creativity, I answered a want ad from an Interior Designer who was looking for an assistant. To my surprise, they hired me on the spot. I began to learn the business and realized that not only was I good at it, but that I really enjoyed it. At that point I made a conscious decision to steer my career permanently toward Interior Design.
Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career?
Over the years there have been many people who have helped give me a step up, however, one person who stands out is Nancy Corzine, the (now) famous designer and purveyor of luxury furnishings. I met Nancy at my very first design assistant job (long before she built her current empire) and she was very kind to me over the years as she gently (or not so gently) mentored me.
What is your favorite aspect about interior design?
I love interacting with the Client – helping them see what they cannot and opening their eyes to the infinite possibilities of design. It’s exciting watching their eyes widen when they begin to see the results.
What are you most passionate about professionally?
The act of creation: to create something from nothing, to make the non-functional functional, to spread beauty where there is none, to inspire and invoke awe – that is what I am most passionate about. And, what I find truly exceptional about my profession is ultimately being able to adorn and enrich our daily lives and in the process help raise myself and my clients above the mundane.
